Tips For Hiring A Great Wedding Photographer
It’s the day you’ve dreamt about for so long! You know you'll want to take the time to savor every moment, because when all is said and done, you’ll have two things: your love, and the memories. Your wedding photo album is the best way to preserve your memories. You and your fiancé will look at the album many times during your lifetime and it will be passed down for generations to come. Finding a great photographer is one of the most important tasks in planning your wedding day. One key thing to remember is to hire a photographer who specializes in wedding photography. Many photographers’ “do it all” and this may show versatility but on this important day you want a photographer who’s primary focus is weddings. They should have been in the wedding business for at least three years. They should be familiar with the wedding procedures, the ceremony and reception hall. This will allows the photographer to anticipate your next move and be in the right place at the right time. Look for a photographer who you feel comfortable being with and talking to. You want someone who is confident but respects your wishes. Trust your feelings, do you like this person? Do you get along with them or get a good feeling from them? There are many different styles of shooting. When reviewing the photographer’s portfolio’s make sure the style you are looking for comes through in their work. Are you interested in a photojournalistic style where they document the weddings in a candid, unobtrusive way? Or are you looking for a traditional wedding photographer who shoots formal or informal portraits of the bridal party, family, and friends in close-up and full length, as well as candid but often set up photographs of key events at the wedding. Or you may want an artistic photographer who takes pictures from unique angles, lighting, etc. This type of photographer creates his or her artistic impression of your wedding day. You may not know before you sit with the photographer what style you want but looking through the work you will know if this is what you always dream your wedding would look like! Be sure to discuss with your photographer the style of photography you want and give them a list of the different shots you want captured. Make sure they can capture the shot you want in the style you like. Beware of photographer who meet in coffee shops and don’t have a studio or office space. Make sure they have been in the wedding business for at least three years. And make sure the photographer you meet with is the one shooting your wedding. Many large studios have several photographers on staff and the work you are looking at may be of their best shooter and not the one they send to your wedding. Make sure you meet with the photographer who will shoot your wedding. This way you can get an idea of his/her work and personality. When comparing prices on packages, consider the number, size and finish of the proofs/enlargements and the type of album the photographer will use. Ask if you will get your proofs on-line or in print. How many proofs will you get to choose your enlargements from? The more proofs, the better the selection you will have for your album (I would say a minimum of 150 proofs). Ask to see the album selection, make sure they have the style you want. Find out how long it takes to get the proofs and the finished album. Have this timeline in your contract. Ask if they keep the negatives/digital files. If they do, for how long. Make sure it is for at least five years and get this in the contract too. Find out the studios price for 5x7, 8x10 and 11x14 enlargements. Make sure the price is reasonable. You don’t want to get stuck with an unexpectedly large bill for extra prints. QUESTIONS TO ASK THE PHOTOGRAPHER: • What’s your primary style? Photojournalistic, artistic, traditional? • Are you the photographer who will actually take our pictures? If not, can we meet the person who will be? • How many years of experience do you have as a photographer? • What percentage of your business is dedicated to weddings? • Approximately how many weddings have you photographed? • Do you shoot in color or black and white? • Do you shoot in a digital format? Can you create both color and b/w versions of the same picture? • How do you typically dress for weddings? • Will you bring an assistant with you to my wedding? • What type of equipment do you use? • Do you bring backup equipment with you to weddings? • Do you visit the ceremony and reception sites prior to the wedding? • How many other events will you also photograph that weekend? • What is your payment and cancellation policy? • How many proofs will I get? • Do you have liability insurance? • How much do enlargements cost? • When will I get my proofs and album? • What is the cost for a parent album? • What is the cost per additional hour of shooting? • Can negatives/digital files be purchased? If so, what is the cost? • Can you retouch the images? If so, what is the cost for retouching?
